SET UP YOUR CLAUDE WORKSPACE · AI for Non-Tech Students Accelerator
Build your personal AI operating system for your thesis work
Quick Personal Claude AI Setup
Getting set up and getting comfortable with Claude. Today you configure Claude to know who you are, what you’re working on, and where your work lives. We walk you through everything you need to be operational — your account, your tools, your workspace, and the foundations your entire Thesis OS runs on.Total time: ~30 minutes.
Your thesis isn’t just a document you write — It’s the first AI project you will ever Manage.
You are already working with AI — most Masters and PhD students are. The question is whether you are using it as a shortcut that produces generic output you half-trust and spend hours fixing, or as a thinking partner that knows your research, challenges your arguments, and helps you produce work you are confident to defend.
The difference between those two experiences is not which AI you use. It is whether you have built an operating system around it.
Here is what is changing in the professional world you are about to enter. Work is now humans + AI. Companies now hire AI like they hire humans because it can do real work. It can code, analyze, read, write, decide, schedule, and follow up. The list keeps growing.
The mindset change you need is: Claude AI is not a search engine or a writing tool. It is the first thing in your professional life that behaves like labor. Treat it the way you would treat a PhD level colleague who started working with you on your thesis yesterday. You give them the brief. You set the standards. You review the work. You know what good looks like. You are responsible for its outcome.
The professionals who will lead the next decade are the ones who learned to direct AI as labor. Your thesis is the first place you get to practice. Over the next sessions you will build a Thesis Operating System inside Claude. An operating system is what makes AI work like a trained research colleague who actually knows your thesis — your research question, your argument, your supervisor’s feedback, your writing voice, and where you left off last session. You start building that system today.
What You Do in This Session
One. Get Claude Pro. Install the desktop app. Most students use AI in a browser tab but you need to start working on the desktop app. This is where agentic AI lives. The desktop app is the environment your Thesis AI OS will run in.
Two. Get oriented. Learn your new workspace. Five minutes of orientation now saves hours of friction over the next ten months.
Three. Personalize Claude. Give it custom instructions and memory. Once configured, every conversation starts with Claude already briefed on where you are at in your thesis.
Four. Set up your saving system. Claude does not save your work to your computer. The synthesis you cracked, the paragraph that finally worked, the argument you finally pinned down. All of it lives inside Claude until you move it. A simple saving system built today means nothing gets lost across the next ten months.
KEY INSIGHT
AI is Labor. You need to treat it that way. Claude PRO is a PhD-level thinking partner available to you for $20 (or 17 euros) a month. A Personal AI Operating System is the environment your work runs inside. It is what you build when Claude knows who you are, what you are working on, and how you work, every time you open it. You cannot build a Personal AI Operating System on the free version.
“The first forty minutes of setup determine the next ten months of output.”
WHY THIS WASN’T POSSIBLE BEFORE
Most people use Claude as a chatbot. You are going to use it as an operating system.
NORMAL CHAT AI
A blank page every time you open it.
You open AI, type a question, get an answer. Next time you open it, Claude has no idea who you are. It does not know your thesis topic, your research question, your writing standards, or your supervisor’s feedback. It cannot see your documents. It cannot see your inbox. Every conversation starts from absolute zero, and the output reflects it. Surface level. Disconnected from the work you are actually doing.
A stranger who forgets your thesis question every time.
CLAUDE AS YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM
An AI that knows you, your work, and your standards.
You configure Custom Instructions so Claude knows who you are before every conversation. You enable Memory so Claude learns about you over time. You build a personal workspace where every chat, document, and output has a place. You connect it to tools. Claude stops being a chat tool and becomes the infrastructure your work runs on.
A trained coworker who already read your thesis brief.
The Big Questions
The Big Questions
Does Claude know anything about your thesis now?
Consider:
Would it know your thesis question, your writing standards, your supervisor’s expectations, or your citation style?
What You Will Build
Set Up your Claude Checklist
Click the bright cyan blue ▼ arrow at the end of each box to get your step-by-step instructions.
Work through each item. Check them off as you go.
0 / 8 COMPLETED
STEP 1 · Get Claude Pro
~5 min
Download Claude and subscribe to Pro
Most students use Claude in a browser tab. The Pro paid version of the desktop app is more powerful and is needed if you want to build an AI Operating System.
▼
STEP 2 · Learn Your Workspace
~5 min
Tour the Claude interface
Before you configure anything, get oriented. Five minutes of orientation now saves hours of friction over the next ten months.
▼
Activate voice input — a habit worth building now
Claude works with voice input. Speaking is faster than typing, and often produces better prompts because you think out loud more freely.
▼
STEP 3 · Personalise Claude — Custom Instructions & Memory
~10 min
Part A — Write your Custom Instructions
Claude that knows who you are and how you work before every single conversation — without you having to explain yourself again.
▼
Part B — Configure Memory
Claude that builds a running picture of your work over time — so every conversation starts smarter, not from zero.
▼
STEP 4 · Set Up Your Saving System
~5 min
Rename your chats so you can find them again
Every conversation you have in Claude is saved in the sidebar — but by default they get generic names like "New chat." Rename every important conversation before you close it.
▼
Create two documents outside Claude — right now
Claude does not automatically save your outputs to your computer. Two simple documents outside Claude protect everything you produce.
▼
Build the 5-minute end-of-session habit
At the end of every Claude working session, before you close anything, move what matters out.
